AusChem Training WA - relevant, practical training for pesticide users

AusChem Training WA is an incorporated body, independent of government, administered by a board comprised of growers, industry and regulators.  It receives no external sponsorship or funding.

AusChem Training WA delivers one of the rural sector’s most successful chemical-use programmes. Courses are well accepted by growers and other chemical users because they are:

  • Practical and relevant
  • Affordable
  • Accessible - offered in your local rural centre
  • Trainers are local, knowledgeable and experienced
  • Course content is regularly updated
  • New courses are introduced to meet market requirements
  • Current AusChem Training WA accreditation is required for producer QA programmes
  • Courses conform to Australia's nationally-consistent, vocational education and training system

AusChem Training WA’s courses prepare growers to understand and operate in markets characterised by increasingly higher standards and expectations. The programme makes significant contributions to the marketing of produce, the protection of the environment, the safety of producers, farm families and their workers, and the continuing sustainable development of Western Australian agricultural, horticultural and viticultural industries. AusChem Training WA courses are required for producer quality assurance programmes, many of which require current AusChem Training WA accreditation which is achievged through reaccreditation courses.

The programme can be tailored to chemical users in non-farming environments such as bushland management, those spraying in sensitive wetlands areas and shire workers involved in weed spraying tasks around the city and in rural and remote areas.  The programme acknowledges the different chemical use, application issues and equipment needs of this group rather than those used by farmers.

Training takes a risk management approach to the selection, handling, applying and disposal of agricultural and veterinary chemicals and the courses aim to provide the full range of information to ensure that operators perform legal applications every time.

Courses are delivered by accredited trainers who have a sound knowledge of chemicals in agriculture, who live in the state and are experienced, practical people.

AusChem Training WA, through registered training organisations, awards a nationally-recognised certification of competency in the management and use of agricultural and veterinary chemicals. Training and assessment conforms with the requirements of the Australian Quality Training Framework, Australia’s nationally consistent, vocational education and training system. Successful participants also receive a AusChem Training WA ID card showing accreditation number and expiry date.

AusChem Training WA policy requires that accreditation be valid for a period of 5 years. It is then necessary to renew the accreditation which will be valid for a further 5 years. AusChem Training WA's reaccreditation courses complete the requirements for renewal of the accreditation.

Reaccreditation is important to keep up to date with changes to industry legislation, best practice and chemical-use compliance requirements that have occurred in the ensuing 5 years and to be made aware of future trends and issues.

Maintaining AusChem Training WA Accreditation

AusChem Training WA policy requires that accreditation be valid for a period of 5 years. It is then necessary to renew the accreditation which will be valid for a further 5 years. AusChem Training WA's 1-day reaccreditation courses complete the requirements for renewal of the accreditation.

Chemical users seeking AusChem Training WA accreditation who took a course more than 10 years ago and who have not taken a reaccreditation programme in the interim are required to demonstrate their competence to today's industry standards and in a way that is acceptable under the Australian Quality Training Framework.

These chemical users need now to:

  • Complete the 2-day accreditation course, Risk Management in Pesticide Use, or
  • Talk to AusChem Training WA office about a correspondence version of this course, or
  • Apply for Recognition of Prior Learning.
