Using Chemicals Safely

“Using Chemicals Safely” is an introductory chemical safety programme that has been welcomed by employers who want basic chemical use training for staff who are just entering the workforce or current employees who apply chemicals under supervision. It may be used as part of routine induction for employees. A number of WA's College of Agriculture deliver the course to Year 11 and 12 students.

This one-day course is seen as a practical pathway to introduce people to the basics of safe chemical use. It is suitable training for those who will spray under supervision.  This training does not provide the AusChem Training WA accreditation.

AusChem Training WA's Risk Management in Pesticide Use course provides suitable training for those people who will spray without supervision.

Topics covered include pest control, chemical labels, transport and storage, personal protective equipment, preparing application equipment, preparing chemicals for use, the application process, clean up and keeping chemical records.

Major points of the course are reinforced by a 30-minute video and participants receive a 140-page manual written in plain language. During the day discussions and activities check understanding and participants can refer later to manual items including a glossary of terms, summary of key points and model answers.

When delivered by a registered training organisation, the course addresses the learning outcomes required under the nationally endorsed units of competency:

  • AHCCHM101A Follow basic chemical safety rules
  • AHCCHM 201A Apply chemicals under supervision.

When delivered by Auschem WA trainers, course attendees receive a Statement of Participation from AusChem WA.

Employers are encouraged to contact AusChem WA with their particular requirements as this course is generally delivered by demand.
